Fun-Tastic English is a module produced and conducted by several students of the National University of Malaysia (UKM). Today, this Fun-Tastic English module was led by Nur Qamarina binti Shahzan, a third-year student majoring in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) from the Faculty of Education. The module advisor, a lecturer at the Pusat Citra National University of Malaysia (UKM), is Prof. Dr. Fazilah binti Idris. On top of that, four other facilitators also participated from various study backgrounds such as TESL, Geography, and Citra.
"Let's Fight COVID-19!" module was conducted to teach students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Batu, Kuala Lumpur to speak English and be aware of the current situation in the pandemic and the correct usage of face masks. The involvement of 40 students is comprised of Year 4 and Year 5 students and was conducted at the PPR Batu Muda hall, Kuala Lumpur, on 10 April 2021. The first activity introduced by the facilitators was making a mask chain. It aim is to reduce the risk of bacterial and viral infections while wearing face masks. This activity's logic is when the students often put their face masks under their chin, especially while they are eating. In order to avoid this, as it causes bacteria and viruses to spread all over the face, mask chain activity was introduced. This activity is effortless, and it only needs three materials; namely beads, string and paper clips. Next, the second activity conducted was a crossword puzzle activity related to the COVID-19 virus. This activity allows Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Batu students to learn general knowledge about COVID-19, such as the symptoms of the COVID-19 virus, prevention measures, and the history of the virus. Furthermore, this activity helps to improve student's general knowledge and sharpens their minds on English vocabulary and grammar. Essentially, the program to some extent, helped students improve their English while learning something new in a fun way. Learning a language does not have to be by books alone. It can be further strengthened by doing activities that can attract students' attention. Hence, the goal that we facilitators often emphasise while organising the Fun-Tastic English module is "Learning English Through Arts and Craft". Last but not least, through this module, students can learn English and build something beneficial to them. Overall, the students admitted these activities excite them as they could use creativity while strengthening their knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary. As a student majoring in education, the program helped expose us to the actual learning and teaching sessions during the pandemic. The program also succeeded by increasing our self-confidence when dealing with the community and fostering the spirit of cooperation of students to launch such an impactful program. When I heard that we are getting a novel that was written by a Malay author, I was so excited. The Weight of Our Sky was just published on February 5, 2019 and my classmates and I were the one who first bought a bunch of them! The book was pretty intense, I am glad Hanna Alkaf mentioned to beware of the violence, OCD, racism and other things that might trigger someone who is suffering with actual sickness. The book was not familiar with myself, I did not face the challenges that Melati went through but I can feel it close to my heart. This is because, growing up I do not have a lot of friends and if I do, they will just left for no reason. Now, I believe that I have a strong and small circle around me that I can trust and rely on. Thing is, most of my friends are suffering with depression, anxiety and bipolar. I am very concern about my friends’ health that I will do anything just to make them feel better.
In this story, I put Melati as my best friend and I can feel the pain that she went through. Things that I cannot do to help her makes me feel terrible about myself because I am reading her as my best friend. After all, I am glad we chose this book to be dramatised because of the strong story line and awareness about the mental issue and also the reminiscent of the tragedy that will never be forgotten in Malaysia’s history, May 13. December 13, 2019 is the day that speaks the truth. The hard work, the sleepless nights, the back-talk and the free-riding season has come to an end. What I want from the start was to make this dramatisation worth it for those who paid for it. A lot of my friends from my diploma years came; about 25 people were in Panggung Seni to support and they said it was a great show. After all the intense ride from the beginning, we ended our journey with another emotional session which was the post-mortem. It was tiring because we held on to too many emotions inside but that was the time to let it all out. I was angry because even if the dramatisation ended pretty well, some ignorant people still cannot make their way to the post-mortem session. They chose to be selfish while their other classmates were in a room discussing the journey that we have had. After all, we admit that there is no ‘i’ in ‘team’. We were all hoping to take the lesson learned to improve for the next project. Love, QAMA x Alhamdulillah again for the opportunity this semester. My friends and I managed to get the dean's list award for the second time and still counting. This semester, I admit it was not an easy journey. We have been through a lot of struggles to meet the deadline. After all that matters is that we learned how to achieve things with strength, patience and passion.
Love, QAMA x First of all, I would like to thank God's plan for our destiny. Why do I say so is because all of us met during Prof. Dr. Fazilah's course called Kesukarelawanan Khidmat Bakti. It all started during the end of our class, which I was absent but the others in the picture were there talking and planning about some unsure things.
I was feeling quite weird when the class ended, my friend added me in a new group instead. And so there goes unplanned trip to Genting Highland in the middle of the night for us to you know, actually getting the vibe from Seoul, Korea. We were crazy and silly about actually thinking the trip is going to be real. On October 24, 2019 we were on board to Incheon Airport Seoul, Korea. When the plane was about to take off, guess who cried like a mad person? Well, it was me. I was feeling out of place - it reminded me of my late dad because my family and I used to travel abroad only with him by our side. The fact that I am going far from home, without him and my family is scary yet it is a thing that I need to get used to. I am somehow proud of myself and my friends that we could travel this far from just a silly plan in a lecture hall. It was the best thing that ever happened in my year, 2019. Hopefully, 2020 will treat me better and give me more space for opportunities. InshaAllah, Amin. Love, QAMA x Every journey starts with fear. I was afraid to grab this opportunity given in life. I was doubting it. I was crying myself out in public, asking for people to convince me whether will I make it?
Well I did take the last train, still hoping it will teach me a lesson and I will learn something out of it. Love, QAMA x Joining the Edu Charity Fun Run organised by Yayasan Angkasa was an opportunity that I never thought of needing. At least the chaotic and tiring experience of having to edit 1001 designs overnight is worth it. Yayasan Angkasa collaborated with Sekretariat Rakan Muda Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia for an education charity fun run. It was held in Tamarind Square, Cyberjaya and almost 900 people participated.
Working as the publicity team, the most tiring part was to be updated on Instagram and Facebook every single day. I even woke up every morning with a thought (or a nightmare I might say) of "have I posted the countdowns yet?" and yes I did not post it. However, the event was a success. I was exposed to a lot of things along the way. I communicated with the public and community to promote the event from going to colleges, streets and universities. It was not an easy job but at least I learned something new. Love, QAMA x On April 27, 2019 my friends and I went to SK Pandan Jaya under Pusat Citra Universiti's course called Kesukarelawanan Khidmat Bakti. It was fun and challenging at the same time. My friends and I were the leaders for the English module just because Dr. Fazilah knew that we are TESL students. We were divided into groups and each group was assigned to do different activities. As for my group, we did a module called 'How to Make an Egg Sandwich'. This activity helps the students to identify healthy and unhealthy food in our daily life.
Our role as facilitators were to facilitate and monitor the students' activity. We provided all the things that they need to make an egg sandwich such as bread, mayonnaise, salt, pepper and eggs. Every group was equipped with all materials and a facilitator that will help them to make their egg sandwich. Every student must wear a glove before starting the activity. It was such a rough day but at least everyone enjoyed having their handmade egg sandwich! Love, QAMA x |
